Case Study

Overview

An animated poster about Critical Thinking, using the concept of Yin and Yang to show balance and opposing perspectives. I designed the poster and created the animation, including the ocean, fish, and rain effects, using Photoshop, Illustrator, and Blender.

Poster Production​

First Version

I designed the first version of the poster using Photoshop and Illustrator, combining symbolic elements and animation layout. However, after receiving feedback, I realized that the composition lacked balance, especially between text and visuals. As it was my first major project, I heavily relied on this draft to prepare for the animation, but I was not satisfied with the layout.

Second Version

Based on the feedback, I adjusted the composition and created a second version. I was more satisfied with this version, but the water texture was generated entirely in Photoshop, which looked flat and unrealistic.

Final Visual Enhancement

To improve the realism for the animation, I switched to Blender to create dynamic and turbulent water effects. This not only solved the water issue but also enriched the visual depth of the entire project. The final version successfully combined Yin-Yang symbolism, critical thinking concepts, and animation-ready elements.

Animation Development

3D Modeling

I modeled the two fish in Blender, which was only my second time using the software. I treated this as a learning opportunity, challenging myself with more advanced techniques, even though the fish models remained relatively simple.

Animation with Geometry Nodes

The most complex part was animating the fish. I used Geometry Nodes to create a natural swimming motion.

 

Environmental Effects

To enrich the atmosphere, I added a dynamic ocean surface and heavy rain as the background. For simplicity and clarity, I used a flat plane to represent both the ocean surface and the sky, and a basic cube to serve as the ocean volume.

Finally, I animated the fish movement with keyframes and linked the camera to the ocean surface. This allowed the entire scene to move together, creating a more immersive and engaging final animation.

 

Challenges

Creating a natural swimming animation using Geometry Nodes was technically challenging, especially in terms of logic construction and node setup.
 To make the motion feel more organic, I referred to several YouTube tutorials and adapted the techniques to fit my concept.
When I added a mouth to the fish model, the viewport became extremely laggy. After several attempts to troubleshoot, I realized the issue was caused by the irregular shape of the mouth, which significantly increased the computational load within the node-based animation. Removing the mouth restored the performance.
